SEIU Local 509, the Massachusetts Union for Human Service Workers, has named State Representative Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton) their 2008 “Legislator of the Year.” The union cited Representative Eldridge’s consistent commitment to fighting for economic opportunity for working families across the Commonwealth and his leadership in working to improve the quality of services for Massachusetts most vulnerable residents.

“I am honored to be recognized by SEIU Local 509 because of their members’ strong commitment to vulnerable populations like at-risk children, elders, and people with disabilities,” said Eldridge. “It is a privilege to serve as a representative and advocate in the Legislature for the families of my district. Expanding economic opportunity for all and improving our quality of life are the goals on which I’m focused, and SEIU Local 509 has been an important partner in these endeavors.”

SEIU Local 509’s president, Michael Grunko, calls Eldridge “one of the most consistent advocates for families and working people in the state. He is also a thoughtful and reliable supporter of services for children, elders, and people with disabilities.”

Eldridge has been a strong proponent of investing in public higher education and workforce training programs to better equip workers with the skills necessary for jobs that will allow them to provide for their families. Further, Eldridge has been a leading voice in the effort to increase the minimum wage in Massachusetts. Holding that health care should be a right, not a privilege, Eldridge has also fought to make health care more comprehensive and affordable.

SEIU Local 509 is the largest union of human service workers in Massachusetts, representing about 11,000 workers in state and community agencies. SEIU 509 is in the forefront of advocating for quality human services.
